Why Beehiiv works for new newsletters#
Beehiiv was built specifically for newsletter creators in growth mode. The Boost referral network sends paid traffic from other publications to yours, the ad marketplace matches your audience to sponsors, and the recommendations widget cross-promotes you to readers of related newsletters. None of these mechanisms exist on standalone email tools, and they compound list growth in ways that “send better emails” can’t.
The Free plan covers up to 2,500 subscribers, which is enough to validate whether anyone wants what you’re sending before you commit to a paid tier. By the time you outgrow it, you’ll know whether the business is real.
When Beehiiv isn’t the right answer#
If your monetization plan is courses, digital products, or paid communities rather than sponsorships, Beehiiv’s tooling is thinner than Kit’s. Kit’s tag-based segmentation, automation sequences, and landing-page builder are designed for selling things to a list. Beehiiv’s strengths are list growth and ad/sponsorship monetization.
If you’re a writer prioritizing distribution out of the box, Substack’s network is broader than Beehiiv’s recommendations and might be the faster path. The trade is that Substack takes 10% of paid subscription revenue while Beehiiv charges a flat fee.
How to decide#
A useful test: what does your future paid offer look like? Subscriptions for “more of the writing” → Beehiiv or Substack. Course launches and product sales → Kit. Sponsorships and ad-network revenue → Beehiiv specifically.
