Where Substack is a good alternative#
Substack works well as a Beehiiv alternative when:
- You’re starting from zero with no list. Substack’s recommendation network and discover surface push paid traffic to new publications in a way Beehiiv can’t replicate.
- Simplicity is the priority. Substack handles the paid subscription stack, payments, and basic growth tools. You don’t need to think about Stripe Connect, deliverability tooling, or automation builders.
- Your monetization is “more writing for a fee”. Substack’s paid-subscription mechanics fit this model cleanly without you configuring anything.
- Revenue is uncertain and you want zero fixed cost. The 10% revenue share is friendlier than flat fees when you’re earning little or nothing.
Where Substack stops being a good alternative#
Substack is the wrong choice when:
- You need automation. Substack’s automation surface is intentionally minimal — welcome emails and basic flows only. No tag-based segmentation, no conditional sequences, no behavioral triggers.
- Sponsorships are core to monetization. Beehiiv’s ad marketplace and Boost referral network are sponsorship/growth features Substack doesn’t have.
- You’re at scale. At 1,000+ paid subscribers, Substack’s 10% cut is dramatically more expensive than Beehiiv’s flat tiers.
- You need control over branding and design. Substack publications look like Substack publications. Custom domain costs extra; deeper customization isn’t possible.
The migration path#
A common pattern: start on Substack to validate, migrate to Beehiiv (or Kit) once revenue or list size makes the trade-offs matter. Substack exports subscribers (with paid status) cleanly, so the migration is mechanically straightforward — but content needs reformatting because the editors differ.
If you start on Substack, plan for the move from day one:
- Keep your subscriber data clean and export-ready
- Don’t lock content into Substack-only features (custom HTML, Substack-specific embeds)
- Build your audience on a custom domain you can take with you (this requires Substack’s paid custom domain feature)
Decision framework#
- Starting, no list, writer-first: Substack is reasonable.
- Starting, has audience already, list-driven business: Beehiiv or Kit. Substack’s distribution doesn’t compensate for losing automation.
- Existing list on Substack with growing revenue: plan a migration window once monthly revenue × 10% > monthly Beehiiv flat fee.
